Southern Oregon University Hannon Library
Southern Oregon University’s existing library was 35 years old and could no longer support the expanding demands of students and faculty. We partnered with the University and architect, SRG Partnership, on this 57,000-sf addition and renovation of the 64,000-sf existing Library, doubling the size. When you enter the rotunda section of the library, you step onto a colorful 28’ diameter circular mosaic with swirling loops of smalti glass and ceramic porcelain tile that resembles wind patterns and a spiraling galaxy. American mosaic artist, Robert Stout, assembled the mosaic pieces in his home in Italy, then shipped the pieces to Ashland for assembly as part of the public art commission.
The three-story glass entry rotunda rises above a major pedestrian intersection and opens into fireplace reading alcoves on the interior. It is flanked on the north by bays of glassed-in group study rooms that glow like lanterns at night and allow natural light to penetrate into the stacks during the day. The new addition on the west contains the coffee shop, computer center, and electronic classrooms. Designed to meet LEED® silver status, creative use of daylight and motion-sensitive lighting controls in the stacks contribute to energy savings of 20% over Oregon code requirements.
